How to care for and maintain your wooden boards

¡Good morning, good afternoon, good evening!
Many of you ask us about the care and maintenance of wooden boards when you purchase one (which says a lot in your favor). That’s why we wanted to put together this clear and simple guide to help you keep your boards in perfect condition.
Wooden boards are much more than kitchen tools: they are silent companions to our meals, preparations, and shared moments.
At HachAzuela, each board is handmade from noble woods —especially olive wood— which offer unique beauty and character. And like everything natural, they deserve attention and care to preserve their splendor over time.
Why you should care for your wooden board?
Wood is a living material. It breathes, changes, and adapts to humidity and use. If we care for it properly, it can accompany us for many years without losing its shine or natural texture.
Good maintenance helps prevent:
- dryness
- cracks
- warping
- unpleasant odors
- bacteria growth
- loss of shine
Our natural wax: an essential ally
At HachAzuela, we recommend using nuestracera, a 100% natural blend (free of additives and synthetic fragrances) that nourishes, protects, and enhances the wood. It is made with:
- beeswax
- carnauba wax
- natural essences
Hydration is one of the most important steps to prolong the life of wooden boards.
How to apply it:
- Apply a thin layer of wax on both sides.
- Spread it well with your hands until the surface is fully covered.
- Let it rest overnight.
- The next day, you can use the board without removing any excess (as long as you applied the right amount).
Used regularly —every 15 days if the board is in daily use— it keeps the wood sealed, satin-smooth, and protected from moisture.
Maintenance tips
- Always wash by hand.
- Use warm water, your usual soap, and a normal sponge. Don’t hesitate to scrub.
- Avoid the dishwasher —heat and prolonged humidity damage the wood.
- Dry it immediately.
- Do not leave it soaking or wet. Dry it with a clean cloth and do not store it until it is completely dry.
- Rehydrate regularly.
- If you use it often, reapply our natural wax twice a month. The texture and smell of the board will tell you when it needs it.
- Disinfect naturally.
- Rub half a lemon with coarse salt over the surface. Let it act for a few minutes and rinse with warm water.
- Store it in a ventilated area.
- Avoid very humid environments and direct sunlight. Good ventilation is ideal for wood.
Things you should NOT do
- Do not use harsh chemical products.
- Do not put the board in the dishwasher.
- Do not let it dry in the sun or near heat sources.
- Do not store it while still damp.
